Opening of a new community garden in the Bowman area

Without a grocery store in town, the garden will fill a needed void by providing fresh produce to residents of Bowman communities.

ORANGEBURG COUNTY, SC – A community garden is now open in the Archer Region.

“We don’t think about growing our own food, we don’t think about gardens or anything like that, so we thought it would be a good opportunity to introduce people in the area to something new that involves growing food. food and having healthier foods. options, things like that,” said volunteer Tydreeona Dantzler.

The organization behind the garden is the Intergenerational Enrichment Community Organization also known as CIGEO. He joined the Tri county health network and Growing COBs to receive funds and materials for the garden.

Growing COB is a community gardening group based in Calhoun, Orangeburg and Bamberg counties.

The organization focuses its work on providing access to sustainable gardens, fresh food and education in low-income communities.

In the Bowman Garden, they grow cabbage, collards, basil and tomatoes. It will serve as an outlet for people to reap the benefits of investing in their communities.

“I also think it’s a good learning tool, just watching something grow, taking care of something and it also gives people in the community something better to do, like something more positive to do. . Something they could put time and effort into and see a good result,” Dantzler said.

They are looking to expand their team of volunteers and are looking forward to seeing the garden grow.

“We just try to do our best to make a difference in our communities.”

The garden is located at 433 One Oak Lane in Bowman.
