Many questions remain about the AHA settlement project for migrant children

There are still more questions than answers about the former American Hebrew Academy’s (AHA) plans to house unaccompanied children who have entered the country illegally.

A long list of questions was sent to Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra by Republican members of the North Carolina congressional delegation, including Sens. Richard Burr and Thom Tillis and Representatives Ted Budd and Virginia Foxx.

One of these questions can be put quite simply: who gets the money?

The lease for the extremely high-end facility would be $10 million per year for five years or $50 million.

According to this letter, a Chinese listed company Puxin Limited loaned the AHA $26 million with an agreement for the academy to become an international preparatory school, but the AHA never made the transition and is closed. since 2019.

It has been reported that the interest rate on this $26 million loan is 18%.

So if the US Department of Health and Human Services’ Office of Refugee Resettlement (ORR) is paying $50 million to lease the AHA campus, is Puxin the beneficiary of that money?

Is the US government essentially leasing the facility to a Chinese company that has been delisted from the New York Stock Exchange and saving Puxin from what appears to be a dodgy loan?

At the local level, Guilford County Board of Commissioners Chairman Skip Alston and Greensboro Mayor Nancy Vaughan noted that the 800 employees at the proposed ORR facility would have a positive impact on the local economy.

It was also reported that the ORR facility would house up to 800 children.

So, according to reports, ORR’s proposed facility for unaccompanied migrant children who have entered the country illegally will have a ratio of one to one staff per child.

That’s many times the ratio of faculty and staff to students, even at the most expensive and prestigious prep schools in the country.

Has the number of employees been overstated or will the ORR facility have a one to one ratio of employees to children?
